About the Artist
“My paintings are created as an antidote to anxiety…I am guided by both the need to retreat into nature, and by the surprising, mysterious spark or divine spirit I find there.” ~ Susan Duke
As an Impressionist, Susan uses color to enhance her compositions. As a result, her work is as vibrant and full of life as she herself is.”
~ Nita Cole, curator at the Louisiana State Exhibit Museum
Susan Duke’s Story
Predominantly self-taught, Susan struggled with childhood disease and expressed herself with art at a very young age. Being repeatedly so close to death gave her a significantly different perspective on life. She is drawn to working with palette knives, which gives her a freedom and power that cannot be achieved with brushes. Susan strives to capture the beauty in every day life with pieces that vary from portraits to landscapes. In 2017, Susan was diagnosed with Stage III breast cancer, which continues to impact her life. This experience has continued to remind her to look for sustaining beauty in everyday moments. An award winning artist, Susan is not defined by the hardships she has faced, but uses them to shape her art and her passion for life. Her paintings transmit the dichotomy of energy balanced with calm.
Susan has been a working artist for her whole professional life. She has earned 27 National, State and Local awards.
Her works have been successfully represented in galleries locally and in 8 major upscale art markets around the country: NYC/Soho; Boston; Boca Raton; New Orleans; Dallas; Aspen; La Jolla and Carmel.
